UAS INTRO TO LITERATURE

1. Poetry
A Girl
By Ezra Pound
The tree has entered my hands,
the sap has ascended my arms,
the tree has grown in my breast downward,
and the branches grow out of me, like arms.

Tree you are,
Moss you are,
you are violets with wind above them.
A child - so high - you are,
and all this is folly to the world.

It is a story about a tree belonging to a girl. It show us symbolism and how Ezra uses it to convey his massage he explains how a girl can go from being weak with no shape to good looking and noticeable to the world therefore this method is used for the tree as well.

I think the poem has nothing to do with the myth or nature from what understand, it is about a young woman, it is about the period of life when a girl starts changing, turning into a woman, her feminine “burst”, her smell (violet), her body starting to shape, and her whole look changing from a little girl, into a gracious young lady. And it means how the girl is growing first she is as tall as the hand then the shoulder and finally the breast. Each time she is growing farther from the mother that gave birth to her.
She describes how ‘’the branches grow out’ ’and protrude themselves for the world to see.She is suggesting that she is proud of her defect. She endsthe poem explaining how this imperfection ‘‘is folly to the world”.

I am not yours

By Sara Teasdale

I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.

You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.

Oh plunge me deep in love -- put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.

My analysis of this poem is that it's about someone who is in love with a person with whom they are unable to be with. For instance, it could be about a man or woman who is married but in love with another. They know there is hope that someday they will be together, just not now, so they dream of whom it will be when the time is right. There is love, will always be love, and someday they can act upon their love. Of all Sarah Teasdale's poems, I thing this one is on a higher plateau than any of her other ones. I think it is one of the most memorable poems of other time, by anyauthor. How interesting these different interpretations- I find myself not agreeing with any of them, but this only highlights the personal-esoteric nature of poetry.

2. Compare the poems

I think this poem was written for me. I am in this exact situation with my mom. I love her, I want to be with her romantically, but that is not socially acceptable. I find myself holding back my love for her. I watch her kiss my dad and I honestly wish that were me that she is kissing. I hate my dad. And I think that the I am not yours poetry is very nice than the magic love poetry because the mutability poetry used the figure of speech so we didn’t boring when we read it, and this words can make this poetry to become beautiful. Like that “To whose frail frame no second motion brings”, “Streaking the darkness radiantly! -yet soon” and “Or like forgotten lyres, whose dissonant strings” they used personification. From this poetry we get the moral value that human live is always change and the human ability at least to make sense of a world that changes. But in the magic love used the pure words so the readers felt that this is just the ordinary weeds. The moral value that we get from this poetry that love is a something which can coming unexpectedly, without planning and never come to mind.
3. Prose

When I read the short story “Araby” I feel very happy because the words that used with the author not difficult and the plot of the story can understanding easily. This short story tells about a young boy who confuses obsession with love. This boy thinks he is in love with a young girl, but all of this thoughts, ideas, and actions show that he is merely obsessed. Throughout this short story, there are many examples that show the boy’s obsession for the girl. There is also evidence that shows the boy does not really understand love or all of the feelings that go along with it.
When the boy first describes the girl, you can see his obsession for her. He seems to notice every detail such as “her dress swung as she moved her body and the soft rope of her hair tossed from side to side” to do put usually remember every minute detail of someone unless you are very intrigued by them. Also note the way he describes her hair as “soft rope” This shows the intricate way the boy views her.
Compare the two English novel “the pearl” and “the forest gump”
The pearl’s novel tells about the sociocultural issues such as, difference of race between black skin and white skin, social status betwen the richer and poorer. And Kino’s family who live in a small brush hut The doctor who refuses to save Coyotito’s life at the beginning of the novel because Kino lacks the money to pay him represents colonial arrogance and oppression. Snide and condescending, the doctor displays an appallingly limited and self-centered mind-set that is made frightening by his unshakable belief in his own cultural superiority over Kino, and by the power that he holds to save or destroy lives. Steinbeck implicitly accuses the doctor’s entire colonial society of such destructive arrogance, greed, and ambition. The European colonizers that govern Kino and the native people are shown to bring about the destruction of the native society’s innocence, piety, and purity. The pearl life on before 20th century dimentions.Forrest Gump is a 1986 novel by Winston Groom. The title character experiences adventures ranging from shrimp boating and ping pong championships to thinking about his childhood love. The Vietnam War and college football are all part of the story. Throughout his life, Gump views the world simply and truthfully. Throughout the course of the book, he really doesn't know what he wants to do in life. Author and narrator Groom uses intonations that capture Gump's personality. Gump is full of wisdom, but is considered an "idiot" because of his low IQ and disability. According to him, he "can think things pretty good", but when he tries "saying or writing them, it kindcomes out like Jell-O". He is also physically strong and falls into amazing adventures. The Forrest Gump over at the last half of the century.

1. Compare a short story with a novel

• Consider also that an author has chosen to the short story format over the novel format. Authors make these decisions for very specific reasons.
• Shortstory,is a form of fictional prose that ranges from 500-2,000 words and 50-100 pages that contain major events of a literary work. On the other hand, Novel is also a form of prose that has a range of 2,000-10,000 words. Unlikeshortstory that deals with major events, it deals with the elaborate sense of a literary work containing both major and minor events that could be found in any literary work.
• A short story is a fictional prose narrative shorter and more focussed than a novel ,usually deal with a single charecter.
• A novel is a fictional prose narrative of considerable length, usually having a plot that unfolds by actions, dilogue and thoughts of the varied charecters.

4. DRAMA/FILM
1.Critical analysis viewed from its moral values conveyed
In the movie Aron Ralston sets off on a typical weekend excursion being outdoors and with nature. During his journey he befriends a couple of female hikers who are somewhat lost and looking to get back on their way. He shows them the ropes of the canyons and they set off home. Little do they know that their friend will need their help just moments later? Becoming trapped under a rock, Ralston now is faced with the challenge of keeping himself alive while trying to break loose from the rock's firm grasp. As Aron works on a solution, we see him wonder about the party he's been invited to just hours earlier, think about how his has ignored his family, wonder about where he left his Gatorade, which would keep him hydrated longer, do a live interview featuring himself on camera, and drink his own urine.
I think the part of the movie that moved me the most actually occurred after the climax, where we see Ralston, broken, desperate, and willing to end his lone-wolf mentality for good. The emotions felt during the last 5 minutes signify human triumph, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit. Incredible movie, a definite must-see 9/10 stars. The film has an energetic start with a split screen showing office-bound commuters/workers going along their daily drudge while our lead, x-tree biker/hiker/climber Aaron Ralston (played to perfection by actor James Franco) packs his gear (unfortunately not finding his Swiss Army knife which might have made a lot of difference to him later on) for a trek into Blue John Canyon country in Utah. While on his way he has a brief fun climbing/diving/swimming interlude with two female hikers (played by Kate Mara and Amber Tambling). He then heads off on his own and at about 20 minutes into the movie takes a tumble with a small boulder that ends up pinning his right arm against the side wall of the thin crevice of a canyon. And that is where we are with him for the next "127 hours" (but only 1 hour of screen time) that it takes him to get loose.
I'm not going to spoil that resolution here, although most will likely hear about it anyway before seeing the movie. An obvious clue that he survives is given by the screen credit early in the film that says it is "based on the book Between A Rock And A Hard Place by Aron Ralston". The guy must of survived if he wrote a book about it right? Well, you can survive in many ways and not all of them leave you whole (both mentally and physically).
Director Danny Boyle brings a lot of the key Oscar-winning players of the Slum dog team back for this new film. Screenwriter Simon Beauvoir, soundtrack composer A.R.Rahman and cinematographer Anthony Did Mantle (this time paired with Enrique Chadian) are chief among those. As an added bonus, from the director of the toilet-diving cam in Trainspotting, we now have the "desperately thirsty character saves his own urine so it can be filmed while drunk through a tube"-cam in this movie.

2. Essential points or characteristics of drama
Drama short stories to simply create a scenario manipulate something/someone and generate an outcome. Not much detail involved at all really. By contrast, a novel is going to contain far more detail in terms of character background, plot device, surrounding events, locations etc. is intended to reflect human behavior and action in the midst of crisis and everyday life. Several genres exist within drama, each with their own storytelling methods, character types and dramatic approach. There are four main genres of drama the tragedy, comedy, melodrama and tragicomedy. Understanding the characteristics of these genres creates a basic understanding of the influences and types of theater being produced today. Drama is a unique tool to explore and express human feeling. Drama is an essential form of behavior in all cultures it is a fundamental human activity. In this site we are investigating the benefits Drama can have on child development when applied functionally within a primary classroom. Drama has the potential, as a diverse medium, to enhance cognitive, affective and motor development. A high degree of thinking, feeling and moving is involved and subsequently aids in the development of skills for all other learning within and outside of schools (transfer of learning).Drama is a discrete skill in itself (acting, theatre, refined skill), and therefore it is offered as a 'subject' in secondary school. However Drama is also a tool which is flexible, versatile and applicable among all areas of the curriculum. Through its application as a tool in the primary classroom, Drama can be experienced by all children.
Drama assists in the development of:
• the use of imagination
• powers of creative self-expression
• decision making and problem solving skills
• and understanding of self and the world
• Self-confidence, a sense of worth and respect and consideration for others.
The SACSA Framework defines Drama as:
'the enactment of real and imagined events through role-play, play making and performances, enabling individuals and groups to explore, shape and represent ideas, feelings and their consequences in symbolic or dramatic form.'
Types of Drama
There are many forms of Drama. Here is a non-exhaustive list with a simple explanation of each:
Improvisation / Let's Pretend
A scene is set, either by the teacher or the children, and then with little or no time to prepare a script the students perform before the class.

Role Plays
Students are given a particular role in a scripted play. After rehearsal the play is performed for the class, school or parents.
Mime
Children use only facial expressions and body language to pass on a message script to the rest of the class.

Masked Drama
The main props are masks. Children then feel less inhibited to perform and overact while participating in this form of drama.
Children are given specific parts to play with a formal script. Using only their voices they must create the full picture for the rest of the class. Interpreting content and expressing it using only the voice.
Puppet Plays
Children use puppets to say and do things that they may feel too inhibited to say or do themselves.
Performance Poetry
While reciting a poem the children are encourage to act out the story from the poem.
Radio Drama
Similar to script reading with the addition of other sound effects, the painting of the mental picture is important there are several other types of Drama referred to in the SACSA Framework.
The general shape of dramatic action (a formula which works for most plays) is five-fold
• An introduction or exposition, which gives the audience nacessery basic informationRising action, where the tempo of event increases.
• A crisis or turning point
• A falling action, usually involving some slackening of the tention
• The climax or catastrophe.
1. Characteristics of drama
• Highly emotional
• Usually focuses on human and/or humanity
• Usually incolves a “crisis of feeling
• A paintful or harmful experience
• Drama could also be like realistic fiction.
